Aurelius Tjin, founder and owner of http://www.InstantIncomeStreams.com, shares the The Biggest Mistake My Friend Made When Publishing His Ebook And How You Can Learn From It: "Not doing market research".
What could be some other mistakes?
Judy Cullins invites us "to double and triple your present book income" by correcting following mistakes:
1. You don't write a short eBook first to test the waters.
2. You don't check in with a professional editor or book coach before you sell your eBook.
3. You don't know your audience before you write your eBook.
4. You don't automate your business
5. You don't have a title that sells well.
6. You don't leverage your eBook for higher price sales.
7. You don't add bonus value to your eBook.
8. You put too many topics in your book.
9. You don't market while you write.
10. You don't brand yourself, your business, and your book
Jim Edwards and David Garfinkel, co-authors of "eBook Secrets Exposed: How to Make Massive Amounts of Money in Record Time With Your Own eBook (whether you wrote it or not!)", have a shorter list. They share seven key mistakes (some common to above) that most ebook authors make and in doing so, "hold themselves back from major success":
1. They don't write to a specific, target audience.
2. They don't automate as many of their business activities as possible.
3. They don't have a compelling title for their ebook.
4. They try to cover too much ground.
5. They are not proactive in their marketing.
6. They don't differentiate their ebook from its competitors.
7. They write ebooks that nobody will pay for.

Aurelius Tjin shares a few tools to research hot markets:
- Keyword suggestion tools – Such as Overture’s keyword suggestion tool.
- Hidden tools that not many people make use of – If you want to find very niche markets try looking at Ebay’s categories such as Books & Comics > Business > Ebooks. One other “hidden” tool that not many people us is eBay’s “Pulse”. This tool will show you the top 10 keywords searched on ebay. You will find this tool on the homepage, called “eBay Pulse”.
- Forums – Take a look at the forum that relates to your topic. If your subject has something to do with weight loss then search “weight loss forums” in your search engine. You’ll find a lot of people posting their questions and problems.
Surveys & Questionaires - If you have an opt-in list why don’t you survey your list about the topic? Ask them what is the biggest problem in ______.
Brian Clark, in How to Create Ebooks That Sell, offers a free 22-page report that "examines the viability of paid content compared to free business models, and it also explores how to make better use of the interactive nature of the Internet in ways the PDF ebook simply can’t".
